What language is spoken in Macau?
The official languages are Cantonese and Portuguese.
Portuguese is spoken by less than 5% of the population (the population of Macau is 700 thousand people)
There are Portuguese schools.
All signs and plaques in Macau are in 2 languages – traditional hieroglyphs + Portuguese.
Information is also duplicated in buses in a third language, English.
The Cantonese dialect of Chinese is known by almost 100% of the population.
Mandarin (Putonghua) is not common, but since there are many tourists from the mainland in the city, Putonghua is understood and spoken in it.
The English level in Macau is quite good. Much better than in neighboring Hong Kong.
All the staff in cafes, hotels and other places speaks English.
The exception is the casino – no one speaks English there.
Taxi drivers usually speak Cantonese and don’t understand Putonghua well. They don’t know English.
